Translated: the battle is no longer being fought only on model quality, but on the availability of power, infrastructure, supply continuity, and the ability to turn AI into a stable economic machine.

Anyone already following the hidden side of digital infrastructure knows this is not just a technical story for insiders. It is a shift about power. Because when a major platform consolidates control over chips, cloud, and computing capacity, it also consolidates control over costs, timing, and the future of competition.

Why Google is pushing so hard on TPUs

The chips at the center of the deal are TPUs, or Tensor Processing Units: accelerators designed by Google for training and running AI models at scale. For some time, Google has been trying to turn them into a credible alternative to Nvidia GPUs, which still dominate the market and remain the benchmark for anyone trying to build increasingly powerful models.

The difference is strategic. If you can rely on in-house hardware or hardware developed with close partners, you reduce dependence on an external supplier, improve control over costs, and can better integrate chips, software, and cloud. In practice, you stop merely buying power and start building a proprietary ecosystem.

For Google, this is also a crucial step financially. TPUs are not only used to run its AI products: they also become a growth engine for Google Cloud, the part of the company that has to convince investors and large customers that massive AI investments can translate into real returns.

The point is not the chatbot: it is who controls computing capacity

The most interesting part of the story is precisely this: public narrative keeps fixating on the interface, while the real competitive advantage is moving under the hood. Whoever has enough energy, chips, racks, cooling, connections, and capital to sustain this demand will be able to keep growing. Everyone else will depend on whoever owns the infrastructure.

Anthropic is the perfect case. Claude’s boom shows that demand for AI models is real, but that demand has an enormous material cost. It takes chips, factories, long-term contracts, cloud partners, and an electricity supply that is now measured in gigawatts. At that point, competition among AI companies looks less and less like a race among lean startups and more and more like an industrial war between power blocs.

This also explains why Broadcom matters so much. It is not the brand the general public immediately associates with AI, and yet it is becoming one of the decisive nodes in the supply chain: it helps design, develop, and bring into production the custom chips that allow tech giants to reduce their dependence on Nvidia and build tailored infrastructure.

In other words, the real frontier of AI today is not the latest “magical” feature shown in a presentation. It is the ability to translate that magic into available, sustainable infrastructure powerful enough to withstand the explosion in demand.

Whoever controls AI infrastructure controls the pace of innovation, access costs, the dependencies of other companies, and, in the long run, a growing part of the digital economy.

External sources:
Reuters – Broadcom signs long-term deal to develop Google’s custom AI chips
Google Cloud – What is a Tensor Processing Unit (TPU)?

Google and Broadcom are strengthening their AI chip alliance through 2031: competition in artificial intelligence is shifting ever more toward infrastructure, cloud, energy, and control over computing capacity.

[64
143,154
post-2026032855","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economia","tag-big-tech","tag-cloud","en-US
["GET
